Martin Bramah, a Pivotal Figure in British Rock
Martin Bramah, a renowned British rock musician and guitarist, gained prominence as a founding member and guitarist of The Fall. His musical journey took several twists and turns, encompassing various collaborations and solo endeavors.
Early Years and Involvement with The Fall
Bramah's association with The Fall began in 1975 when he met Mark E. Smith and keyboardist Una Baines. Initially, Bramah was intended to be the group's vocalist. However, realizing Smith's lack of guitar proficiency, they switched roles, with Smith becoming the frontman while Bramah assumed the guitar duties.
Departure from The Fall and Blue Orchids
Bramah's tenure with The Fall ended in April 1979 due to deteriorating relations with Smith. Author Simon Ford speculated that Bramah's involvement with Baines contributed to their strained relationship.
Following his departure, Bramah formed Blue Orchids with Baines, releasing an album and several singles on Rough Trade Records. The duo also accompanied Nico on her 1982 British tour, documented on the album "Do or Die: Nico in Europe." The band disbanded in 1982 but briefly reunited in 1985, releasing a single before disbandment.
Thirst and Return to The Fall
Bramah went on to form Thirst with The Fall's former drummer, Karl Burns. In 1989, he surprisingly returned to The Fall, replacing Brix Smith. However, he was dismissed during an Australian tour in 1990.
Blue Orchids Reformation and Factory Star
After his second departure from The Fall, Bramah re-established Blue Orchids with guitarist Craig Gannon, releasing singles and an album that was finally released in 2003. In 2009, he formed Factory Star with former Fall members Steve Hanley, Paul Hanley, and Hop Man Jr.
Later Career and Solo Endeavors
Bramah has continued to lead Blue Orchids into the 21st century, releasing albums and reissuing older material. In 2008, he released a solo album, "The Battle of Twisted Heel," showcasing his folk influences.
