Early Life and Tennis Career

Martin Verkerk is a former Dutch professional tennis player. He was born on October 31, 1978, in Haarlem, Netherlands. Verkerk began playing tennis at the age of seven. He turned professional in 1996.

Breakthrough Season and French Open Final

After a slow start to his career, Verkerk broke into the top 100 of the ATP rankings in 2002. In 2003, he achieved his greatest success. He won his first ATP title in Milan, defeating Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the final.

At the 2003 French Open, Verkerk shocked the tennis world by reaching the final. He defeated Roger Federer in the second round, Vicente Spadea in the third round, Rainer Schüttler in the fourth round, and Carlos Moyá in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he upset Guillermo Coria.

In the final, Verkerk faced Juan Carlos Ferrero. Although he lost in straight sets, he moved up to No. 15 in the world rankings as a result of his performance.

Later Career and Retirement

Verkerk reached a career-high ranking of No. 14 in September 2003. He won his second ATP title in Amersfoort in 2004. However, his career declined after 2004 due to injuries. On December 9, 2008, he announced his retirement from professional tennis.
