Biography of Martin Yan

Early Life and Education

Martin Yan, a renowned American chef of Chinese descent, was born in December 1948 in Guangzhou, China, to a restaurant owner and a grocer. From a young age, Martin developed an interest in cooking and created his first dish at the age of twelve, which turned out to be amazing. At the age of thirteen, he moved to Hong Kong and attended Munsang College while working in a restaurant to further refine his culinary skills, particularly in barbecue dishes. After a period of time, Martin Yan graduated from the Overseas Institute of Cookery and then went to Canada to continue his studies. In 1975, he earned a prestigious master's degree from the University of California.

Television Career and Yan Can Cook

In 1978, Martin Yan made his debut appearance on a local television talk show, and shortly after, he became the host of the show Yan Can Cook, which he appeared in over 1,500 times. He frequently appeared on television, sharing the secrets of traditional Chinese cuisine and other culinary expertise. Martin Yan's expertise led him to open the Yan Can Restaurants chain and establish the Yan Can International Cooking School in San Francisco.
