Marvin Bauer was born on August 1, 1903, in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, to parents Charlotte and William Bauer. He grew up and completed his schooling in Cleveland, Ohio. During his time in school, Marvin published a newspaper called "Home Brew" and worked every summer, including assisting a surveyor, delivering ice, working in a factory, and being a scout leader at a boys' camp.

In 1925, Marvin received a bachelor's degree from Brown University. Following his father's advice, he continued his studies in law at Harvard, which he completed in 1928. Marvin funded his education at Harvard himself by working at the law firm Thompson, Hine and Flory during his summer breaks and wisely investing the money he earned. He then enrolled and graduated from Harvard Business School in 1930.

From 1930 to 1933, Marvin worked at the Cleveland-based company Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue as a corporate law specialist. In 1933, Marvin Bauer met James McKinsey, the founder of a small consulting firm, who offered him a job in his company. After joining the firm, Marvin became a partner and began working in the New York office.

Following McKinsey's death in 1937 and the division of the business among the partners, Marvin Bauer became the owner and leader of the New York branch. He served as managing director from 1950 to 1967, during which time the firm's annual revenue grew from $2 million to $20 million, and the number of consultants increased from 18 to 500. He continued as a director and partner until 1992. In total, Marvin Bauer worked in the field of management consulting for 59 years.
