Biography of Phillip Harris

Phillip Charles Harris was born on December 19, 1956, in the small town of Bothell, Washington. He began fishing at the age of 8, accompanying his father, and later pursued crab fishing after completing high school. Initially, he worked for free until he proved that he was indispensable. By the time Harris turned 21, he was one of the youngest captains of crab fishing vessels in the Bering Sea. By the age of 30, Phillip became the captain and co-owner of the "Cornelia Marie."

Participation in "Deadliest Catch"

Starting in 2004 until his death, Harris and his vessel were under the spotlight of the camera crew of the extreme reality series "Deadliest Catch." The "Cornelia Marie" made its first appearance in the show during crab fishing in the first season as a partner to the fishing vessel "Maverick," actively participating in the search after the sinking of the "Big Valley." From the second season onwards, the vessel and its crew became regular participants in the show.

Health Challenges

In 2008, Harris fell out of his bunk during a storm and believed he had broken his ribs. After continuous coughing up blood, his sons and crew convinced him to seek medical help, leading to the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism. The treatment took nearly a year, and Harris returned to fishing in January 2009. On January 29, 2010, while unloading at the port of Saint Paul Island, Alaska, Harris suffered a severe stroke and was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. Despite showing signs of improvement, such as speaking and squeezing hands, the captain passed away on February 9, 2010, due to intracranial bleeding, at the age of 53.

Legacy

The episode of "Deadliest Catch" in which Harris passed away aired on July 20, 2010, followed by a special episode dedicated to his memory. Although Harris was not married at the time of his death, he had been married and divorced twice before. He raised two sons, Joshua and Jacob Harris, who worked in the crew of his fishing vessel. Harris enjoyed fast driving and owned a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a Chevrolet Corvette. He also had an unusual hobby of building bird feeders. Shortly before his death, Harris founded the coffee company "Captain's Reserve," and his sons currently continue to develop the brand and expand the family business.
