Biography of Mary Carlisle
Mary Carlisle was an American actress and singer. She moved to Hollywood with her mother after her father's death, and caught the attention of Universal Studios executive Carl Laemmle. At the age of eight, she made her debut in the film industry. Her inclusion in the "WAMPAS Baby Stars" list in 1932 contributed to her growing acting career. Over the following decades, Carlisle appeared in nearly two dozen films, alongside stars such as Bing Crosby, Fay Wray, and Ralph Bellamy.
After marrying former actor James Blakely, who later became an executive producer at 20th Century Fox, Mary Carlisle began to appear less frequently on screen. Eventually, in 1943, she decided to retire from acting. From 1930 to 1943, Mary appeared in 62 films. Seven years later, she found a new occupation as a manager at Elizabeth Arden's beauty salon in Beverly Hills.
In 1942, Mary Carlisle married producer James Blakely, with whom she lived until his death in 2007. The couple had one child. Today, Carlisle remains the last surviving star from the "WAMPAS Baby Stars" list. Her contribution to the American film industry was recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which was unveiled on February 8, 1960.
