Early Life and CareerMary Frann, an American actress best known for her role as Joanna Loudon in the television series "Newhart," was born as Mary Frances Luecke in St. Louis, Missouri. She became involved in show business at a young age, working as a model for commercials on a local television station. At the age of 18, Mary won the "Junior Miss Missouri" beauty pageant, and in 1961, she became the national "Junior Miss" and received a scholarship to attend college. She pursued her higher education at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, while also working as a weather reporter for the NBC station in St. Louis.

Television and Film Career
In 1964, Mary made her television debut in an episode of the project "Kraft Suspense Theatre." That same year, she starred in the TV movie "Nightmare in Chicago" alongside Carroll O'Connor. She ventured into film in 1966, appearing in "Nashville Rebel" with Waylon Jennings and Loretta Lynn. However, the film was a commercial failure. Mary made only one more film appearance in 1976's "Woman in the Rain." Her career on television, however, proved to be more successful.

In 1974, Mary landed the role of Amanda Howard in the popular soap opera "Days of Our Lives," which she portrayed until 1979. She also made appearances in series such as "Quincy, M.E.," "The Rockford Files," "Fantasy Island," and "WKRP in Cincinnati." In 1982, Mary played the lead role in the short-lived series "King's Crossing" alongside Linda Hamilton. Later that same year, she landed the most famous role of her life as Joanna Loudon, the wife of Bob Newhart's character, in the popular comedy series "Newhart." The show aired from 1982 to 1990 and received 25 Emmy Awards and 5 Golden Globe Awards.
While working on "Newhart," Mary also found time to work on several other projects. In 1985, she played one of the main roles in the TV movie "Gidget's Summer Reunion," and in 1988, she appeared in "Dance 'Til Dawn" alongside Alyssa Milano, Christina Applegate, and Kelsey Grammer. In 1986 and 1987, Mary co-hosted the Miss USA and Miss Universe beauty pageants. Her final acting role was in the series "Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction," with her episode, "The Curse of Hampton Manor," airing two years after her death due to the show's irregular schedule.
Personal Life and Philanthropy
Mary Frann's career extended beyond acting as she dedicated herself to various charitable projects. For seven years, she was a member of the voluntary organization "Celebrity Action Council." On the night before her death, Mary attended a meeting for the organization. On September 23, 1998, Mary passed away in her sleep at her home in Beverly Hills, California. It was later revealed that she died of a heart attack, and medical professionals discovered an unusual injury to her heart muscle. She was laid to rest at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.
