MaryAnn Mihychuk: A Trailblazer in Canadian Politics
Early Life and EducationMaryAnn Mihychuk was born in Canada to Ukrainian immigrants, Matra Mihychuk and Kateryna Salamandyk. She earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Winnipeg in 1979 and a Master's degree from Brock University in 1984. She holds a professional certification as a geological engineer.
Career in Geology
Mihychuk worked as a geologist in Newfoundland and Labrador (1984-1986) and Manitoba (1986-1992). In 1992, she married Kenneth Marshall and they have three children: Sarah, Anna, and John.
Civic and Provincial Politics
Mihychuk's political career began in 1989 when she was elected as a trustee for the Winnipeg School Division. She was re-elected in 1992. From 1995 to 2004, she served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, representing the New Democratic Party. She held several ministerial roles in the provincial government from 1999 to 2004.
Federal Career
In 2004, Mihychuk ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Winnipeg. She was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in October 2015 as a member of the Liberal Party. Soon after, she was appointed Minister of Employment, Workforce Development, and Labour, serving until January 2017.
