Masha Makarova: Roots in Krasnodar
Maria Makarova, the founder of the Russian rock band 'Masha i Medvedi,' made a name for herself in her hometown of Krasnodar. As a young woman, she played the flute, wrote songs, and performed with the band 'Drink.' Her formal education included a degree in journalism from Kuban University.
The Birth of 'Masha i Medvedi'
In 1997, Makarova sent a demo recording of her music to Oleg Nesterov, lead singer of the group 'Megapolis.' Nesterov invited Makarova to Moscow, where she joined forces with the 'bears' and Nesterov became their official producer. Together, they assembled material for their debut album.
Breakthrough with 'Lyubochka'
In 1998, 'Masha i Medvedi' released their first album, 'Solntse Klesh,' featuring the hit single 'Lyubochka.' Despite its playful title, the album showcased a raw and edgy folk-rock sound that captivated audiences. The band embarked on a successful concert tour and appeared at major festivals.
The Flowering of Creativity
Makarova's second album, 'Tsvet Fueghos,' was released in 1999. The album included the duet 'Tsvet' with Nesterov, which received significant airplay on MTV Russia. However, Makarova's behavior began to change, becoming erratic and unpredictable.
Dissolution and Rebirth
In 2000, Makarova abruptly announced the dissolution of 'Masha i Medvedi.' The 'bears' attempted to continue without her, but found limited success. Makarova's solo career also floundered. Four years later, the band reunited, only to disband again in 2006. This time, Makarova's departure was prompted by her pregnancy.
Motherhood and New Directions
Makarova gave birth to twin daughters in 2005. Shortly after, she reunited 'Masha i Medvedi' for a third time and recorded the introspective album 'Bez Yazyka.' While the band continued to perform, Makarova also began writing songs that diverged from their traditional sound.
The Birth of 'YA MAHA'
In 2008, Makarova launched her side project, 'YA MAHA,' with a performance at the Moscow club 'Ikra.' This project allowed her to explore new musical horizons and showcase her diverse talents.
Ongoing Legacy
Today, 'Masha i Medvedi' remains an active touring band and is currently working on a new album. Makarova's music continues to connect with audiences of all ages, inspiring generations of musicians.
