Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Steven Victor Tallarico, known professionally as Steven Tyler, was born on March 26, 1948, in New York City. As a child, he aspired to become a game warden and worked in a bakery to earn extra money. He envisioned himself as a future president, vowing to provide equal educational opportunities for all Americans. During his school years, Tyler performed as a vocalist in various bands, including The Left Bank.
Meeting Joe Perry and Forming Aerosmith
While on vacation at his family's resort in Sunapee, New Hampshire, Tyler met Joe Perry, a guitarist who worked at an ice cream parlor and played in bands such as Jam Band and Chain Reaction. They instantly connected and formed Aerosmith in 1970.
Debut Album and Critical Acclaim
Aerosmith's self-titled debut album, released in 1973, sold well despite criticism for its similarities to The Rolling Stones. Nevertheless, it achieved double platinum status and featured two notable tracks that later became staples of their greatest hits compilations.
Touring and Vocal Acrobatics
Aerosmith embarked on extensive tours, captivating audiences with their energetic performances and Tyler's signature vocal acrobatics. He became known for his ability to alter his voice's tempo and pitch unpredictably. The band's second album, "Get Your Wings," released in 1974, further increased their popularity and earned them two more platinum certifications.
Heroin Addiction and Musical Decline
By 1977, Aerosmith's heavy heroin use was taking a toll on their music. Despite the release of "Draw the Line," their quality had declined compared to their previous works. A failed British tour highlighted their dwindling creativity and stamina.
Comeback with "Get A Grip"
After a four-year hiatus, Aerosmith returned in 1993 with "Get a Grip," which topped charts worldwide and sold over 5 million copies. The album featured hit singles and a trilogy of music videos starring Tyler's daughter, Liv Tyler, which launched her acting career. The band's newfound success was largely attributed to the support of MTV and the commercial success of their music videos.
