Prelude
In 1983, Andrey Mashnin, a musician from the remote northern region of Taimyr, arrived in Leningrad. He found work at the legendary "Kamchatka" boiler room, previously known as Viktor Tsoi's workplace. Mashnin's early musical endeavors were strictly acoustic.
Electric Epiphany
Around 1992, during the recording of his debut electric album "Tikho v Lesu!", Mashnin encountered Eugene "AiAiAi" Fedorov. Fedorov's influence, along with that of Alexander "Duser" Voronov, exposed Mashnin to new musical horizons. Inspired by bands like Biohazard and Ice-T, Mashnin delved into a more experimental and aggressive sound.
Lyrical Brilliance
Mashnin's songwriting combined his distinct literary style with the intensity of his new music. His lyrics, described as "original and powerful," evoked the surrealism of contemporary writers like Yuri Mamleev, Vladimir Sorokin, and Vladimir Raduy. They oscillated between the pathological and the hyperreal, capturing both the grotesque and the mundane aspects of human existence.
Recognition and Acclaim
In 1999, Mashnin Bênd released their album "Bomba," which garnered widespread critical acclaim. The band became known as "Rage Against The Mashnin" in St. Petersburg, despite Mashnin's dual life as a literary editor for the magazine "Pyatoe Koleso."
