Masayori Oka: A Journey from VFX Master to Award-Nominated Actor

Born on December 27, 1974, in Tokyo, Japan, Masayori 'Masi' Oka was raised in a single-parent household after his parents divorced when he was just a month old. At age six, he relocated to Los Angeles with his mother.

Early Promise and Education

As a child, Oka displayed exceptional intelligence, with an IQ reportedly over 180. He achieved recognition at a young age, appearing on the television game show "Child's Play" at age eight and gracing the cover of "Time" magazine at age 12. He graduated from The Mirman School and Harvard-Westlake School in 1992.

Career Beginnings in Visual Effects

After graduating high school, Oka served as an interpreter at the 1992 Summer Olympics. He went on to pursue a bachelor's degree in mathematics and computer science at Brown University. While a student, he led the male a cappella group "The Bear Necessities."

Oka joined George Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) in hopes of earning an Oscar for his visual effects work. However, he also pursued acting, negotiating a contract that allowed him to do sporadic roles in Los Angeles while maintaining his job at ILM in Marin County, California.

Breakthrough in Acting

In 2006, Oka landed the role of Hiro Nakamura in the NBC superhero drama "Heroes." His character spoke Japanese, which Oka translated himself. The show's creators chose to have Nakamura "speak" English through subtitles. Oka used his natural speaking voice for future Hiro and raised his pitch slightly for present-day Hiro.

Dual Career and Beyond

While starring in "Heroes," Oka continued to work at ILM as a technical director of research and development. He programmed software for movie special effects. In 2008, he starred in the action comedy "Get Smart's Bruce and Lloyd Out of Control." He has also appeared in films such as "Friends with Benefits," "Searching for Sonny," and "jOBS."
