Early Life and Footballing Roots
Massimo Carrera was born on April 22, 1964, in Pozzuolo Martesana, Lombardy. Growing up in the northern Italian town of Sesto San Giovanni, he developed an unyielding passion for football from a young age, starting his journey as a player at age six. With unwavering determination, Carrera's childhood dream was to play for Juventus Football Club.
He began his rise to prominence in local teams, honing his skills with Pro Sesto before embarking on a professional career in the lower leagues of Italian football. Stints with Russi and Alessandria paved the way for his breakthrough in 1985 when he joined Pescara in Serie B.
Club Career: Rise and Shining
Carrera made his Serie B debut with Pescara, making 19 appearances and scoring once. He subsequently moved to Bari in southern Italy, where he spent five seasons under the tutelage of coach Enrico Capuzzo. His astute defensive capabilities played a pivotal role in Bari's promotion to Serie A. Carrera became the team captain and a local legend, helping them win the Coppa Italia, UEFA Champions League, and UEFA Cup.
In 1991, his childhood dream was realized when he signed for Juventus, the club he had always aspired to play for. Under the guidance of legendary manager Giovanni Trapattoni, Carrera spent five unforgettable years with the Bianconeri, winning numerous trophies, including Serie A, the Coppa Italia, the Supercoppa Italiana, the UEFA Champions League, and the UEFA Cup. His performances also earned him the distinction of representing the Italian national team.
After facing strong competition at Juventus, Carrera joined Atalanta in 1996, where he quickly became a team leader and wore the captain's armband for six seasons, making 207 appearances. He later moved to Napoli, Treviso, and Pro Vercelli, where he retired from his playing career at the age of 44.
Coaching Career: From Juventus to Moscow
In June 2009, Carrera became Juventus's youth sector technical coordinator. He also briefly coached the first team when Antonio Conte faced trial for match-fixing allegations. Following Conte's disqualification, Carrera took over as manager and guided the team to their Italian Super Cup triumph in the 2012/2013 season, his first trophy as a coach.
When Conte left Juventus in July 2014, Carrera followed him to the Italian national team as assistant coach. After the 2016 European Championship, Conte joined Chelsea, and Carrera became Dmitri Alenichev's assistant at Spartak Moscow.
Making History with Spartak Moscow
In 2016, Spartak Moscow's management entrusted Carrera with the role of head coach, tasked with winning the Russian Cup and securing a top-three finish in the league. Despite initial skepticism from the fans, Carrera led the team to impressive victories, earning their unwavering support and the iconic chant, "A tutti avanti! Massimo Carrera!"
Under Carrera's guidance, Spartak Moscow won the Russian Premier League title in 2017 and the Russian Super Cup for the first time ever. In October 2017, they made history by defeating Sevilla 5-1 in the Champions League, a remarkable achievement that solidified Carrera's status as a legendary figure in the club's history.
However, following a decline in Spartak Moscow's performance and the sale of star player Quincy Promes to Sevilla in 2018, Carrera was dismissed from his coaching duties in October. Despite his departure, the club acknowledged his significant contributions, crediting him as one of the architects of their long-awaited championship.
Post-Spartak Career and Personal Life
Carrera's success at Spartak Moscow caught the attention of several top clubs, and in 2019, he became the manager of Greek team AEK. Despite signing a two-year contract, his tenure lasted only a year.
In his personal life, Carrera has maintained a stable and private family lifestyle. Married to his wife, Pinni, whom he met in his youth, and father to daughters Francesca and Martina, he is known for his unwavering dedication to his family.
Despite his success, Carrera's life has not been without adversity. In 2012, he became embroiled in a tragic incident after colliding with a vehicle that had crashed into a car containing two women killed in the accident. Carrera was not at fault, but the tragic circumstances left an indelible mark on his life.
As of 2021, Carrera is serving as the head coach of Bari, where he looks to continue his legacy of success in the world of football.
