Early Life and CareerMassimiliano Stano, born and raised in Bari, Italy, ventured into the world of athletics in 2003, initially focusing on long-distance running. In 2013, he relocated to Milan to further his training, and later moved to Castelporziano in 2016, where he has remained under the mentorship of coach Patrizio Parcesepe. Since 2016, Stano has been married to fellow athlete Fatima Lotfi. Aside from his athletic endeavors, he holds a degree in programming.
Competitive Successes
Stano embarked on his race walking journey in 2008, securing a fourth-place finish in the Italian under-18 10 km championship. The following year, he triumphed in the under-18 5000 meters. He also competed in the under-18 World Championships in Brixen, clocking 46:00.85 minutes in the 10,000 meters event and finishing 14th.
In 2010, Stano claimed the Italian under-20 title and finished seventh in the adult championship. He subsequently represented Italy at the under-20 World Championships in Moncton, Canada, placing 13th.
International Recognition
Stano excelled at the European under-20 Championships in 2011, securing a fourth-place finish in the 10,000 meters with a time of 43:24.52 minutes. In 2013, he made his debut in the 20 km event, winning a silver medal at the European under-23 Championships in Tampere with a personal best of 1:25:25 hours.
2014 marked Stano's first appearance at a major international championship for adults at the European Championships in Zurich. However, he failed to live up to his expectations, placing 24th.
Breakthrough and Records
Stano's breakthrough came in 2018 when he set a new personal best of 1:21:02 in the 20 km event at the Italian Championships, earning his first national title. At the European Championships in Berlin, he delivered another impressive performance, finishing fourth with a time of 1:20:51.
Continuing his momentum in 2019, Stano dominated the Italian Championships in the 10 km event. He shattered the Italian record in June with a time of 1:17:45. Four months later, he participated in his second World Championships in Doha, finishing 14th.
