American Man Who Paints a Baseball for 34 Years
Biography of Michael CarmichaelMichael Carmichael is an American decorator and interior designer from Alexandria, Indiana. For the past 34 years, he has been working on a unique project that has earned him a certificate from the Guinness World Records.
The Beginning
It all started 34 years ago when Michael decided to paint an ordinary baseball with oil paint. The next day, he painted it again, and continued to do so every day for months. Each day, the ball grew slightly larger as he added layer upon layer of paint.
The Record-breaking Ball
After a year of consistently adding paint, the baseball had transformed into a colossal sphere. It weighed 1587 kg, had a circumference of 179.2 cm, and a diameter of 57 cm. This earned Michael a world record. The ball had a total of 22,894 layers of paint, a number that only he can truly comprehend due to the years of dedication he put into this project.
A Family Affair
In 1977, Michael started this project with his son, Michael Jr. They painted the first layer together, and soon the ball became a community effort. Children, grandchildren, guests, and even strangers joined in the painting process to create a unique piece of art. Photos captured the 1500th, 13300th, 22539th, and the record-breaking 22589th layer of paint. The final layer before the record was an orange hue, giving the massive ball its distinctive appearance.
A Continuing Project
Although the record has been achieved, Michael continues to paint the ball every day. The original string that held the ball had to be replaced with a stronger rope, and eventually a metal cable. Initially, a small brush was used, but now Michael relies on a roller. When asked why he continues to paint the ball, he admits he doesn't know why, but he has no plans to stop. The giant ball has become a local attraction and is regarded as a work of art by many.
