Mateo Kežman: From Serbian Star to Global Striker
Early Career and Rise to ProminenceMateo Kežman, a skilled Serbian forward, began his professional career with Serbian clubs Zemun and Radnički (Pirot). He later played for Loznica, Sartid, and Partizan before making a significant move to PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands, where he became a prolific goalscorer.
Global Stardom and Club Hopping
Kežman's impressive performances at PSV caught the attention of major European clubs. He joined Chelsea in 2004 but struggled to find consistent playing time. Loan spells at Atlético Madrid and Fenerbahçe followed, before he had more success with Paris Saint-Germain.
Russian Adventure and Number 99
In 2009, Kežman signed for Zenit Saint Petersburg on loan. He opted for the unusual number 99 at Belarusian club BATE Borisov, as his preferred number 9 was already taken. Despite leaving BATE after the season, he returned to South China in 2011 for the Asian Challenge Cup.
Retirement and Legacy
Kežman's playing career came to an end on January 26, 2012, after a match for South China. He missed a crucial penalty, resulting in a fourth-place finish for his team.
