Dennis Viollet, an English footballer renowned for his goalscoring prowess, is often hailed as one of the most underrated strikers of all time.

Early Life and Manchester United Career

Born in Manchester in 1933, Viollet joined Manchester United in 1949 and quickly established himself as a key player. He made his debut in 1953 and formed a formidable partnership with Tommy Taylor as part of the famous "Busby Babes" in the 1950s. Viollet played a pivotal role in United's back-to-back league titles in 1956 and 1957, scoring 178 goals in 291 appearances for the club.

Surviving the Munich Air Disaster and Golden Boot

Despite his small stature and slight frame, Viollet was a prolific goalscorer with exceptional speed and ball control. He survived the tragic Munich air disaster of 1958 and went on to demonstrate his class in the following season, scoring a club record 32 goals in 36 matches to win the First Division Golden Boot.

Later Career and Coaching

In 1962, Viollet was surprisingly sold to Stoke City, where he primarily played as a midfielder. He helped the "Potters" win the Second Division title in 1963 and reach the League Cup final in 1964. After ending his playing career in 1967 with a farewell match, Viollet briefly managed Preston North End and Crewe Alexandra in 1971.

American Legacy and Later Years

In the 1980s, Viollet moved to Florida and worked as a coach with various teams, including Jacksonville TeaMen and Jacksonville University. He also coached the Richmond Kickers, winning the USL First Division championship and US Open Cup in 1995. After retiring from coaching in 1999, Viollet was inducted into the USL Hall of Fame in 2002. He passed away from cancer in 1999 at the age of 65.
