Matthew Leckie: Australian Football Prodigy
Early Career and YouthMatthew Leckie, born on February 4, 1991, is an Australian professional footballer who plays as a forward for German Bundesliga club Hertha BSC and the Australia national team. Leckie began his career with Ballin Lions, playing in the Victorian Premier League until September 2, 2009, when he signed a two-year deal with Adelaide United.
Adelaide United Success
On September 18, 2009, Leckie made his Adelaide United debut, coming off the bench in the 75th minute against Melbourne Victory. He scored his first goal in the AFC Champions League on February 24, 2010, against Pohang Steelers at Hindmarsh Stadium, followed by another goal against Shandong Luneng.
Move to Borussia Mönchengladbach
Leckie's impressive performances earned him a move to Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach at the end of the 2010/11 season. He scored his first goal for the club in a 5-2 friendly victory over Aberdeen on July 9, 2011.
International Recognition
In August 2009, Leckie was called up to the Australia U-19 team for the ASEAN U-19 Championship. He opened his scoring account for the youth team in the semi-final against Vietnam (4-1 victory), but Australia lost to Thailand on penalties in the final. Soon after, he received a call-up to the Australia U-20 team for the Asian Youth Cup.
Senior National Team Debut
Pim Verbeek included Leckie in Australia's squad for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers against Indonesia, but he did not feature in the match or travel to the tournament. Leckie's senior debut for Australia came on November 14, 2012, as a late substitute against South Korea.
Hertha BSC and Continued Success
In 2015, Leckie joined Hertha BSC, where he has established himself as a key player. He has represented Australia at numerous major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup in 2018 and 2022.
