In 1889, Lasker emerged as a formidable force on the international chess scene by winning the New York Masters Tournament. This victory propelled him into the forefront of chess players worldwide. In 1894, he challenged and defeated Wilhelm Steinitz, the reigning World Chess Champion, claiming the title for himself.
Title Defenses and Legacy
Lasker successfully defended his title against several challengers over the course of his illustrious career, including Siegbert Tarrasch, Frank Marshall, and David Janowski. He held the World Championship for an unprecedented 27 years, making him one of the longest-reigning champions in chess history.
