Matija Smoodiš: A Slovenian Basketball Legend
Slovenian basketball player Matija Smoodiš is a renowned forward and center. He has represented the Slovenian national team at numerous European Basketball Championships.
Early Career and Achievements
Smoodiš's professional career began with the Novo Mesto-based club Krka. During his tenure with Krka, he helped the team secure the Slovenian championship title in 1999-2000.
After his success in Slovenia, Smoodiš moved to Italy, where he played for Benetton Treviso. With Treviso, he won two Italian championships (2000-2001 and 2004-2005), two Italian Cups (2001 and 2002), and three EuroLeague championships (2000-2001, 2005-2006, and 2007-2008).
International Career
Smoodiš represented Slovenia at the European Basketball Championships in 1999, 2001, 2007, 2009, and 2011. During the 2009 tournament, he suffered a severe back injury that sidelined him for most of the 2009-2010 season. Despite this setback, he returned to the court in 2010 and continued to showcase his exceptional skills.
Russian Dominance and Later Career
Following his time in Italy, Smoodiš moved to Russia, where he joined CSKA Moscow. With CSKA, he won six Russian championships (2005-2006, 2006-2007, 2007-2008, 2008-2009, 2009-2010, and 2010-2011) and two Russian Cups (2006 and 2007).
After his tenure with CSKA, Smoodiš returned to Krka, where he led the team to another Slovenian championship title in 2012-13. He also won the Slovenian Cup in 2012.
Post-Playing Career
Upon retiring from playing, Smoodiš transitioned into a management role with the Slovenian national team, where he currently serves as the team's general manager.
