Matías Vecino: A Uruguayan Midfield Maestro
Early Career and Domestic SuccessMatías Vecino, a Uruguayan central midfielder, began his football journey at the youth academy of Club Sportivo Central Español. He made his professional debut for the club in the Uruguayan Primera División on March 6, 2010, as a substitute against Tacuarembó. Vecino scored his first league goal on April 3, 2011, against Rampla Juniors.
In August 2011, Vecino joined Nacional, where he made his debut in a 2-2 draw against Defensor Sporting. He played a crucial role in the team's successful 2011/2012 season, helping them win the Uruguayan Championship.
European Journey
On January 19, 2013, Vecino transferred to Fiorentina in Italy for a fee of €2.3 million. He made his Serie A debut on September 26, 2013, as a substitute against Inter Milan. After limited playing time at Fiorentina, Vecino was loaned to Cagliari in January 2014 and later to Empoli for the 2014/2015 season.
Return to Fiorentina and International Recognition
Upon his return to Fiorentina in 2015, Vecino established himself as a regular starter. He competed for the Uruguayan under-20 team, making 14 appearances and scoring 4 goals. Vecino represented Uruguay in the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the 2011 South American Youth Championship, where they finished as runners-up.
Transfer to Inter Milan
On July 31, 2017, Inter Milan activated a €24 million release clause in Vecino's contract with Fiorentina. He became an integral part of the Inter midfield, making over 150 appearances for the club.
