Biography of Matt Greenwood

Matt Greenwood, a terminally ill British student, whose friends raised over £60,000 for him to fulfill his dying wishes, passed away from cancer, but not before he managed to accomplish almost all the items on his bucket list.

Diagnosis and Brave Journey

Matt Greenwood, a 21-year-old engineering student, was just beginning to experience the joys and challenges of adult life when he received a devastating diagnosis: an aggressive form of cancer in his thigh. By early 2016, the cancer had metastasized to his lungs, and doctors did not hide the fact that he had less than six months to live. Matt's friends rallied together to raise over £60,000 to help him make his last wishes come true. One of the items on his list was to travel the world. During his battle with cancer, Greenwood had to undergo leg amputation, but he never lost his determination and sense of humor. He remained an inspiration to all who knew him.

An Extraordinary Person

Keith Gull, the director of Edmund Hall College at the University of Oxford, where Matt was a student, described him as a brilliant student and an incredibly brave individual who always thought of others. Gull stated, "He was not shy about expressing his gratitude to everyone who helped him. He was an extraordinary person, and we will miss him terribly."

Last Wishes

Matt Greenwood's friends organized a charitable campaign that quickly raised over £60,000 to fulfill the student's final wishes. Greenwood hoped to visit Paris Disneyland and experience the glory of Rome and Athens. Challenging himself, he wanted to drive a racing car, take a hot air balloon ride, and, of course, go skydiving. The terminally ill patient also wanted to see the musical "The Lion King" in London, complete the Three Peaks Challenge, and relearn how to ride a bicycle.

A Passion for Sports and Travel

Before his illness, Matt Greenwood dedicated much of his time to sports. He rowed and played rugby at Oxford and enjoyed running, playing squash, and cycling outdoors. He had already traveled to Africa, China, and across Europe, and he expressed his desire to continue exploring the world. In his last message, he said, "I ask all of you to keep your fingers crossed so that I can get better soon and make the most of every minute I have left. The support of my friends and family has helped me get through the last 15 weeks. I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has been by my side."

An Overflow of Gratitude

Matt Greenwood's mother, Michaela, expressed her gratitude to everyone who supported her son. She stated, "There are no words to fully express my gratitude. The fundraising efforts were truly amazing. I also want to thank you for everything you have done for Matt in the past few months. His friends constantly visited him, sent him cards and gifts, and played Monopoly with him. I am one hundred percent sure that you helped my son endure this difficult time, and I will always be grateful to you for that."
