The Tragic Demise of Baby Grace

A toddler from Mentor, Ohio, known only as Baby Grace, was brutally murdered by her mother, Kimberly Dawn Trenor, and stepfather, Royce Clyde Zeigler. After her remains were discovered in Galveston Bay, it took months to identify her.

Early Life and Family

Riley Ann Sawyers was born on March 11, 2005, to teenage parents Kimberly Trenor and Robert Sawyers. The young couple lived with Robert's mother, Cheryl, in Mentor, who primarily cared for the baby. However, Robert engaged in an extramarital affair with Catherine Priester, with whom he later had a son.

Unfortunate Upbringing

In October 2006, Trenor and Riley disappeared after Trenor filed a domestic violence complaint against Robert. They had moved to Spring, Texas, where Trenor met Zeigler online. The couple married in June 2007.

Fatal Incident

Zeigler believed in strict corporal punishment, particularly for children who addressed adults without using "Sir" or "Ma'am." On July 24, 2007, he and Trenor subjected Riley to a horrific beating involving two leather belts and water submersion. After Riley hit her head on the tile floor, she became unable to move.

Discovery and Investigation

Realizing Riley was not breathing, Trenor and Zeigler disposed of the body in a plastic container at the bottom of Galveston Bay. On October 29, 2007, a local fisherman, Robert Wayne Spinn, discovered the container and its tragic contents. The coroner determined that Riley had suffered multiple skull fractures, prompting a murder investigation.

Arrests and Charges

Zeigler attempted suicide shortly before Thanksgiving 2007, leaving a note exonerating Trenor. However, he later claimed innocence, alleging that he was in another room during the beating. Both Trenor and Zeigler eventually admitted responsibility for Riley's death.

Sentencing and Trial

Trenor pleaded guilty to murder in 2009 and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 38 years. Zeigler was convicted of the same charge and sentenced to life without parole. Trenor's eligibility for parole begins on November 24, 2047.
