Biography of Matthew Barney
American Performance ArtistMatthew Barney is an American artist who specializes in the genre of performance art. He gained the most recognition for his experimental film series "The Cremaster" (a total of five films, 1995-2002), in which he served as the writer, director, producer, and main performer. The conceptual structure of Barney's video works is complex and multifaceted, with fantastical imagery interweaving into a multilayered system of allegories and metaphors. Essentially, Matthew Barney's films are large-scale artistic performances translated onto film, where intricate paintings and vaseline-like "sculptures" created by Barney himself are intricately incorporated into the visual narrative. Despite his work in film, Barney primarily considers himself a sculptor. The Guardian newspaper described the "Cremaster" series as the "first truly outstanding work in the realm of cinema made within the context of visual art since Buñuel and Dali's 'Un Chien Andalou'." One of his recent works is the film "Drawing Restraint 9," in which his wife, Icelandic singer Björk, played the leading role.
