Early Life and Career
Matthew Richards was born into a family of swimmers. He began his journey in the water at the tender age of five, honing his skills at the Droitwich Leisure Centre before joining the Dolphins Swim Club at eight. By the age of ten, he had transitioned to the Worcester Swimming Club.
Richards' childhood was filled with various sports, but his true passion lay in swimming. He excelled in this discipline, setting Welsh national records in both the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle events. At the European Junior Championships in Kazan in 2019, he emerged as the champion in the 100-meter freestyle.
International Success
In 2020, Richards made his mark at the European Aquatics Championships in Budapest. He secured two silver medals in the men's 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter freestyle relays. He also contributed to a gold medal-winning performance in the mixed 4x100-meter freestyle relay, though he did not swim in the final.
Olympic Glory
The pinnacle of Richards' career came at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Representing Great Britain in the men's 4x200-meter freestyle relay alongside James Guy, Duncan Scott, and Tom Dean, he swam the third leg in a blistering 1 minute 45.01 seconds. This effort proved crucial in securing a gold medal for Great Britain, their first in this event since 1908.
Richards continued his impressive form at the 2024 Paris Olympics. In a thrilling 200-meter freestyle final, he narrowly missed out on gold by just 0.02 seconds, finishing behind Romanian David Popovici. Nevertheless, his performance showcased his exceptional talent and solidified his status as one of the world's top swimmers.
