Biography of Matthias Hughes
Early Life and CareerMatthias Hughes is a German actor known for his portrayal of villains in action films, particularly those centered around martial arts. He holds a black belt in karate and kickboxing in the heavyweight division. Hughes gained recognition for his roles in films such as Dark Angel, Fist of the North Star, and Blackbelt.
Journey to Hollywood
In 1986, Hughes embarked on a journey to Hollywood with only $1400 to his name. Soon, his money ran out, and he found himself sleeping in his car. To make ends meet, he worked as a bouncer in nightclubs. His breakthrough came in 1987 when he landed a role in "No Retreat, No Surrender 2" as a Russian villain, earning $6000.
From Bodyguard to Actor
Following his early acting gigs, Hughes worked as a bodyguard for Bob Marley's widow and her family. He traveled with Ziggy Marley across America. However, for a year and a half, he struggled to find substantial acting opportunities. Eventually, he secured a role in the film "Fist Fighter." Throughout his career, Hughes appeared in no more than one film per year.
Success as a Villain
Hughes landed his biggest role as an alien invader in "Dark Angel" alongside Dolph Lundgren. From then on, he predominantly portrayed villains in martial arts films, including "Future Kick" and "Blackbelt." Additionally, he made appearances in television series such as "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" and "The Age of Betrayal."

In 1995, Hughes received his first leading role in the action film "Cyber Tracker." He is categorized as a B-movie actor. Standing at 6'6" (197 cm), Hughes is a German kickboxer-turned-actor who has appeared in over 35 films. Despite his on-screen persona, Hughes is described as a kind and articulate individual who simply wants to pursue his craft. "When I moved to Los Angeles, I had a dream - to appear on the screen. America is the only place where anyone can do whatever they want," he says. At the age of 39, Hughes participated in the Mr. Galaxy competition in Tampa.
