Biography of Matvey Korobov
Matvey Georgievich Korobov, a boxer and member of the Russian Olympic boxing team, was born on January 3, 1983, in Orotukan, Russian Federation. He currently resides in Moscow. Korobov is one of the most prominent and dominating boxers in all weight categories in Russia. He will be making his debut at the Olympic Games for the first time. The 25-year-old athlete has been competing in the middleweight category (up to 75 kilograms) since 2004. His notable victories include winning gold at the World Championships in 2005 and 2007. In 2006, Matvey Korobov became the European champion. Out of the 16 fights he participated in at the world and European championships, nine were stopped by the referee due to a points advantage, and two ended in knockouts.
Early Life and Career
Born in Orotukan, in the eastern part of Russia, Korobov was located almost at the same latitude as Alaska. At the age of thirteen, Korobov moved to another part of the Russian Federation to pursue boxing. The future renowned boxer resided in a sports dormitory owned by the famous military sports club CSKA (Moscow). In 1998, when Russia was experiencing an economic crisis, Matvey Korobov's parents decided to move to the United States to provide financial support for their beloved son. In 2007, in an interview, Matvey's father Georgiy stated that leaving his son alone in Russia was very difficult, but boxing was what he had always desired. As a child, Korobov experimented with various sports such as football and basketball. However, boxing seemed the most appealing to him, so the eight-year-old boy dedicated himself to this sport. Even at that time, he would come home and spar with his own father.
Education and Interests
Matvey Korobov holds a higher education degree obtained from the Moscow State University of Physical Education, where he studied to become a coach. As a serviceman in the Russian Army, he earned the rank of sergeant and competes for the CSKA sports club. To this day, Matvey remains passionate about basketball and football, making sure not to miss matches of the Moscow basketball club CSKA. One of Matvey Korobov's hobbies is automobiles, but he approaches this interest from a practical perspective. His ideal car would be a Toyota Camry because it consumes little fuel and performs well on Russian roads. Additionally, Matvey has an interest in politics and international relations. His girlfriend, Anna, is pursuing her education at the Moscow Institute of International Relations.
