Early Life and Athletics BeginningsMaud Charron, born on April 28, 1993, in Rimouski, Quebec, initially pursued a career in circus arts before sustaining injuries. Following a recommendation, she ventured into a fitness club where her weightlifting journey commenced at the age of 19.
Competitive Career
2017-2018: Breakthrough PerformancesCharron's competitive debut was marked by a silver medal in the snatch at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim. Her stellar performance continued at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, where she shattered the Commonwealth record with a 122 kg clean and jerk, surpassing Christine Girard's record set in 2006. Charron's triumph culminated in a gold medal.
2020-2021: Olympic Gold and Pan American Records
In the lead-up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Charron set personal and Pan American records in all lifts at the 2020 Pan American Championships, which was held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
2021: Tokyo Olympic Champion
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Charron achieved the pinnacle of her career by winning the gold medal in the women's 64 kg category. She lifted 105 kg in the snatch and 131 kg in the clean and jerk, totaling 236 kg. Her victory was dedicated to fellow Canadian Olympic champion Christine Girard, who was awarded a gold medal six years after the 2012 Olympics due to the disqualification of other competitors.
2022: World Championship Medalist
Charron continued her success at the 2022 World Championships in Bogotá, Colombia, where she competed in the 59 kg category. She secured a third place in the overall with a total of 231 kg and a small silver medal in the snatch (103 kg).
2024: Olympic Silver Medalist
Charron competed in the women's 59 kg category at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, where she claimed the silver medal with a total lift of 236 kg.
