Early Life and Education
François Mitterrand was born on October 26, 1916, in Jarnac, France. He received a Jesuit education and later studied law and political science at the University of Paris.
Political Career
Early Political AppointmentsMitterrand began his political career in 1946, when he was elected to the National Assembly as a member of the Radical-Socialist Party. He held several ministerial positions during the Fourth Republic, including Minister of Public Works, Transport, and Tourism (1950 and 1954), Minister of Armaments (1952), Minister of Finance (1953), and Minister of Commerce and Industry (1954).

After the establishment of the Fifth Republic in 1958, Mitterrand continued to serve in various ministerial roles:

Prime Minister (1957)
Following the resignation of Prime Minister Guy Mollet in the wake of the Suez Crisis, Mitterrand became Prime Minister of France on June 12, 1957. He served in this post until November 6, 1957.
Later Political Career
After his premiership, Mitterrand remained active in politics. He served as President of the Left Radical Party from 1965 to 1968 and founded the Socialist Party in 1969. Mitterrand was elected President of France in 1981 and served two terms until 1995.
