Early Life and EducationGerrit Zalm was born in Enkhuizen, Netherlands. He pursued his education in Economics at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, graduating in 1975.
Career in Economics
Zalm's career began in the Ministry of Finance, where he served from graduation until 1983. He then transferred to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, eventually becoming its Director-General. In 1988, he was appointed Deputy Director of the Central Planning Bureau, a body responsible for assessing the financial implications of government policies. He became its Director in 1989, a non-political role that nevertheless provided significant political influence.
Political Career
Zalm's formal entry into politics occurred on August 22, 1994, when he was appointed Minister of Finance as a member of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). He held this position until July 22, 2002, serving in both the first and second Wim Kok administrations.
During his tenure, the Dutch economy experienced a period of stability and prosperity. Zalm introduced several innovative policies, including the "Zalm standard," which aimed to mitigate economic fluctuations through measured responses rather than abrupt reactions. These reforms cemented his reputation as a skilled politician.
Zalm briefly served as parliamentary leader of his party during Jan Peter Balkenende's first administration. He was reappointed Minister of Finance on May 27, 2003, during Balkenende's second administration, and also held the position of Deputy Prime Minister.
Post-Political Career
After leaving politics, Zalm worked in the private sector. He became General Director of the bank DSB, known for its loans to underprivileged borrowers. In 2008, he was appointed CEO of the bank created from the merger of ABN AMRO and Fortis Netherlands.
Legacy
Gerrit Zalm is renowned for his passion for pinball and played a cameo role in Theo van Gogh's film "Cool" in 2004. He holds the record for the longest-serving Minister of Finance in Dutch history. His innovative policies and contributions to the country's economic well-being continue to shape the Netherlands today.
