Pedo Sanchez: President of the Socialist International

Pedro Sanchez Perez-Castejon was elected President of the Socialist International on November 25th, 2022, by acclamation at the Madrid congress. He succeeded former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, who remains Honorary President.

Early Life and Education

Sanchez was born on February 29th, 1972, in Madrid, Spain. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the Complutense University of Madrid in 1995, and later studied at IESE Business School and the Free University of Brussels. In 2012, he obtained a PhD from the Camilo Jose Cela University.

Political Career

Sanchez became involved in politics through the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party's youth organization. He worked as a political advisor in the European Parliament, the Office of the UN High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the party's management. From 2004 to 2009, he served on the Madrid City Council.

Leadership of the Socialist Party

In 2014, Sanchez became Secretary-General of the Socialist Party, the first leader to be elected by direct vote of the party's rank-and-file. Following the 2015 elections, King Felipe VI invited him to form a government, but he was unsuccessful, as well as after the subsequent 2016 elections.

Amidst the party's poor performance in the Galician and Basque elections, Sanchez was technically ousted from his post as Secretary-General on September 28th, 2016. He initially resisted this "internal coup," but resigned on October 1st and relinquished his congressional seat on October 29th when his party abstained from voting against Mariano Rajoy's minority center-right government.

In a subsequent election for Secretary-General on May 21st, 2017, Sanchez regained the leadership, defeating his main critic from the party's right wing, Susana Diaz, by a margin of 50.2% to 39.9%.

Prime Ministership

Motion of No Confidence

On June 1st, 2018, the parliament passed a vote of no confidence in the incumbent Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, whose party had been implicated in a corruption scandal. King Felipe VI invited the Socialist Party leader, Pedro Sanchez, to form a new government.

Inauguration and Policies

Sanchez was sworn in as Prime Minister on June 2nd and officially took office. As an atheist, he chose to swear on the Constitution rather than the Bible. During his tenure, he has implemented progressive policies, including same-sex marriage, euthanasia legislation, and a minimum wage increase.

Current Role

Sanchez remains Prime Minister of Spain and plays an active role in international organizations such as the Socialist International. His leadership has been praised for its commitment to social justice, equality, and democracy.

Personal Life

Pedro Sanchez is married and has two daughters.
