Early Life and Education

Maurice Allard(1923-2003) was a French bassoonist, composer, and pedagogue. The nephew of renowned bassoonist Raymond Allard, Maurice studied at the Douai Conservatory before graduating from the Paris Conservatory in 1940 under Gustave Dhérain.

Orchestral and Chamber Music Career

Maurice Allardbegan his orchestral career in 1942 with the Lamoureux Orchestra and Fernand Oubradous' chamber orchestra. From 1949 to 1983, he held the position of principal bassoonist with the Paris Opera. In 1949, he became the first bassoonist to win the prestigious Geneva International Music Competition.

Teaching and Methodologies

Allardwas appointed Professor at the Paris Conservatory from 1957 to 1988. He authored the esteemed "School of Bassoon Playing" (1976) and other pedagogical materials. His students included leading French bassoonists, notably Gilbert Audin and Laurent Lefèvre.

Solo and First Performances

Maurice Allardrecorded numerous works by Vivaldi and Mozart, as well as contemporary French composers. André Jolivet wrote his bassoon concerto for Allard, which he premiered in 1954. He also gave the first performances of concertos by Marcel Landowski (1958), Jean Rivier (1964), and sonatas by Henri Martelli (1946) and Marcel Mihalovici (1959), both with pianist Henriette Roget-Puig.
