Maurice Paul Auguste Cliquet, a Pioneer in Medicine

Early Life and Education

French physician Maurice Paul Auguste Cliquet was born in Mulhouse, Haut-Rhin, France. He pursued his medical studies in Paris, where he earned his doctorate in 1889.

Medical Career

In 1902, Cliquet became the Director of General Medicine at the Tenon Hospital, a position he held until his retirement in 1924. Throughout his career, he published extensively on a wide range of medical topics, with his most notable contributions lying in the fields of neurology and psychiatry.

Medical Contributions

Cliquet is best known for his descriptions of two medical syndromes:
Klippel-Feil Syndrome

In his 1912 publication, Cliquet described a rare congenital disorder characterized by the fusion of cervical vertebrae, resulting in a short neck and other skeletal abnormalities. This condition became known as Klippel-Feil syndrome.

Klippel-Trénaunay-Weber Syndrome

Cliquet also described a condition characterized by vascular malformations and hypertrophy of extremities, which was later named Klippel-Trénaunay-Weber syndrome.

Legacy

Cliquet's meticulous observations and contributions to medical science have left a lasting legacy in the fields of neurology and psychiatry. His descriptions of these syndromes have provided valuable insights into the understanding and treatment of congenital disorders.
