Early Life and EducationMaurizio Pollini was born on January 5, 1942, in Milan, Italy. His father, Gino Pollini, was an architect. Pollini began studying piano at an early age with Carlo Lonati and later with Carlo Vidusso.
Competition Success
Pollini's talent became evident when he won second prize at the Geneva International Music Competition in both 1957 and 1958. In 1960, he graduated from the Milan Conservatory and won the prestigious International Chopin Piano Competition.
Career Highlights
After his victory at the Chopin Competition, Pollini refined his skills under Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. He embarked on extensive tours throughout Europe in the mid-1960s, made his American debut in 1968, and toured Japan in 1974. In 1977, he performed to great acclaim in the Soviet Union.
Pollini's long-standing partnership with Deutsche Grammophon Records has introduced his music to audiences worldwide. He recorded all five Beethoven concertos with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Claudio Abbado in 1987. In 1993, he gave the first complete cycle of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas in Berlin and Munich.
