Maury Povich, born on January 17, 1939, in Washington, D.C., USA, is an American television journalist, author, and host of the controversial show Maury. He was the middle child in the Povich family, with his parents Shirley and Ethyl Povich. His father worked as a sports columnist for the Washington Post.

Early Life and Education

In 1962, Maury Povich graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied television journalism. After graduation, he began working for WWDC, a Washington radio station. In 1966, he transitioned to television and joined WTTG-TV as a sports journalist and commentator. Within a year, Maury became the host of the daytime show Panorama, which gained him recognition and popularity among viewers.

Television Career

From 1977 to 1983, Maury Povich worked as a news anchor on various channels in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. In 1983, he returned to Washington television. In 1986, when media mogul Rupert Murdoch acquired the television channel Metromedia, he immediately offered Maury Povich the opportunity to host the New York show A Current Affair. Although the show had a tabloid news format, it often discussed political and social scandals, contributing to the channel's ratings and Maury's popularity. He worked on the show until 1990 when he left to pursue other projects.

During his tenure as the president of the New York chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences from 1991 to 1997, Maury Povich created his own show, initially called The Maury Povich Show. After stepping down from his presidency, he became the producer of the show and renamed it Maury. The show's popularity soared as it specialized in intrigue and exposés, particularly in the realm of personal relationships. Maury's catchphrase "You are not the father!" from the show, where desperate mothers attempted to locate the fathers of their children through DNA tests, became a memorable part of television history.

Personal Life

Maury Povich has been married twice. His first marriage to Phyllis Minkoff lasted from 1962 to 1979, and they have two children together. In 1984, he married television journalist Connie Chung and adopted her son, Matthew.
