Early Life and Education
Max Aronoff was born in the United States and studied at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, graduating in 1934. His teachers included renowned violinists Carl Flesch and Louis Bailly.
The Curtis Quartet and Philadelphia Orchestra
While still a student, Aronoff joined the string quartet that would later become known as the Curtis Quartet. He remained a member until his death, and the quartet was disbanded after his passing. Aronoff also briefly performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Teaching at Curtis
Immediately following his graduation from Curtis, Aronoff began teaching at his alma mater. He continued to instruct there throughout his life, sharing his knowledge and passion for music with countless students.
The New School of Music
In 1943, Aronoff and his Curtis Quartet colleague Jascha Brodsky founded the New School of Music in Philadelphia. The school specialized in preparing musicians for ensemble careers and is now part of Temple University.
Max Aronoff Viola Institute
In 1990, the Max Aronoff Viola Institute was established in Washington State. This annual summer school provides intensive training for violists from around the world.
