Max Cavalera, born Massimiliano Antonio Cavalera on August 4, 1969, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, is a Brazilian vocalist and guitarist of Italian descent.
Early Life and Musical Influences
Growing up in a household filled with musical interest, young Max gravitated towards the sounds of Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, and AC/DC. However, his musical taste soon transitioned to heavier genres like Death, Venom, and Possessed.
Sepultura: The Early Years
In 1984, Max and his brother Igor founded Sepultura. Despite the nascent state of Brazil's death/thrash metal scene, the band achieved remarkable success with their heavy riffs and socially conscious lyrics.
Road to Fame
In the late 1980s, Max secured a seven-album deal with Roadrunner Records, leading him to relocate to New York City. In 1991, Sepultura released the platinum-selling album "Arise" and solidified their presence in the metal landscape.
Transition and Evolution
Sepultura continued to evolve with the release of "Chaos A.D." in 1993, incorporating elements of groove metal and Brazilian folklore. In the mid-1990s, Max collaborated with his brother Igor and Alex Newport on the side project Nailbomb.
Departure from Sepultura
In 1996, Max departed from Sepultura amidst internal conflicts. He subsequently formed the band Soulfly, continuing to explore the musical themes that had defined his career.
Life After Sepultura
Max has resided in Phoenix, Arizona since leaving Sepultura, alongside his wife Gloria and their children. He frequently collaborates with musicians from his late stepson's favorite bands, including Fred Durst, Tom Araya, Chino Moreno, and Corey Taylor.
Cavalera Conspiracy
In 2008, Max and Igor reunited for the side project Cavalera Conspiracy. Their debut album, "Inflikted," was critically acclaimed and commercially successful, showcasing the enduring chemistry between the brothers.
