Early Life and EducationMax Gelman embarked on his artistic journey in 1916-1917 at the Society of Artists' School in Petrograd. He continued his studies at the Higher Artistic and Technical Workshops (VKhUTEMAS) in Moscow from 1921-1922 and subsequently at the Higher Artistic and Technical Institute (VKhUTEIN) in Leningrad from 1922-1925, where he honed his craft under the guidance of Alexander Matveev.
Teaching Career and Legacy
From 1926 to 1964, Gelman played a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of sculptors as a professor at the Kiev Art Institute. Among his esteemed students were Nina Petrova, Galina Petrashevich, Oksana Suprun, Konstantin Goodyan, and Pavel Kalnitsky.
Literary Circle
Beyond his studio, Gelman forged strong bonds with renowned writers and poets, including Osip Mandelstam, Isaac Babel, and the duo of Ilya Ilf and Evgeny Petrov.
