Early Life and Education
Born in Berlin, Seiffert received his music education at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik, where he studied under the tutelage of the esteemed musicologist Philipp Spitta. In 1891, he earned his doctorate with the publication of his dissertation titled "J. R. Sweelinck and his Direct German Pupils."
Notable Publications
Seiffert's academic endeavors resulted in several acclaimed publications. His most notable work, "Geschichte der Klaviermusik" (1899), is a comprehensive history of piano music. He also played a pivotal role in the editorial project "Denkmäler deutscher Tonkunst" ("Monuments of German Music") from 1892 onward.
Institutional Leadership
In 1917, Seiffert co-founded the first German Institute for Musicological Research (Institut für musikwissenschaftliche Forschung) alongside Karl August Rau. This institution was later transformed into the State Institute for German Musicology (Staatliches Institut für deutsche Musikforschung) in 1935.
Directorship of Musicological Institutes
Following Rau's passing in 1921, Seiffert assumed the directorship of the State Institute for German Musicology, a position he held until 1941. Under his leadership, the institute became a hub for musicological scholarship and research in Germany.
