Maximilien von Latour: A Renowned Austrian General
Early Life and Military CareerMaximilien von Latour was born in Belgium in 1737 to an ancient Dutch aristocratic family. He enlisted as an ensign in the Austrian infantry regiment Salm-Salm in 1755 and served until 1782, rising through the ranks to Colonel. He fought in the Seven Years' War and distinguished himself at the capture of Kolin (June 18, 1757).
Service in the Austrian Army
In 1782, Latour was promoted to Major General and appointed commander at Wieliczka. He participated in military operations in the Austrian Netherlands in 1787. In 1788, he became Land Marshal of Luxembourg. In 1789, he rose to Field Marshal Lieutenant and was appointed commander of troops in the Netherlands and chef of the dragoon regiment (later the 14th Dragoon Regiment).
Campaigns in the French Revolutionary Wars
Latour's military exploits include:Capturing Namur, Mons, Ghent, Bruges, and Ostend in 1790 during a four-month campaign.
Commanding the right wing of the Austrian army in the Netherlands in 1792 and taking Leuven, Orchies, and Saint-Amand.
Defeating French forces at Roermond in 1793.
Commanding Austrian troops in the allied army in the Netherlands in 1794 and participating in the battles of Charleroi and Fleurus.
Commanding a corps in the 1795 campaign.
Defeating General Moreau's army at Geisenfeld in 1796 as commander of the Upper Rhine Army.
Commanding the Rhine Army from January 10, 1797.
Later CareerAfter the Treaty of Campo Formio, Latour was appointed commander of troops in Silesia and Moravia. In 1805, he became President of the Imperial War Council (Hofkriegsrat), the highest military authority in Austria.
Legacy
Maximilien von Latour was a highly decorated and respected Austrian general. His military victories and leadership contributed to the Habsburg Monarchy's efforts in the French Revolutionary Wars.
