Biography of Fitzhugh Lee
Early Life and Military CareerFitzhugh Lee was born on November 19, 1835, in Clermont, Fairfax County, Virginia. He came from a family with a strong military background, as his father was General Henry Lee and his uncle was General Robert E. Lee. Fitzhugh graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1856 and served as an instructor at the Cavalry School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He then joined the United States Army and was stationed in Texas.
Civil War Service
After Virginia seceded from the Union, Lee resigned from the U.S. Army and joined the Confederate Army. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a colonel in the 1st Virginia Cavalry Regiment in March 1862. He served in various staff positions and led his brigade in several battles, including the famous raid around McClellan's army on the Peninsula. Lee distinguished himself in combat, particularly during the Battle of Chancellorsville and the Gettysburg Campaign.
Later Life and Post-War Career
After being seriously wounded at the Battle of Winchester in September 1864, Lee returned to active duty in January 1865 and commanded Confederate cavalry units in the final stages of the war. Following the war, he pursued a career in agriculture and was elected as the Governor of Virginia in 1885. Lee also served as the U.S. Consul General in Havana, Cuba, from 1896 to 1898. During the Spanish-American War, he volunteered for service in the U.S. Army and commanded the 7th Corps in Cuba.
Later Years and Legacy
Upon retiring from active duty, Lee settled in Washington, D.C. He passed away on April 28, 1905, at the age of 69. Throughout his life, Lee wrote several memoirs and historical works, with his most notable work being a biography of his legendary uncle, General Robert E. Lee, titled "General Lee" (1894). Fitzhugh Lee left behind a legacy of military service and literary contributions that continue to be remembered and studied today.
