Maximiliana von La Roche

Maximiliana von La Roche, born on September 6, 1756, was the daughter of renowned writer Sophie von La Roche and Georg Michael von La Roche, the chancellor of the Trier electors. Her exceptional charm and grace earned her admiration within her mother's literary salon.

Connection with Goethe

In 1772, Maximiliana met Johann Wolfgang von Goethe during his stay in Wetzlar. Their encounter ignited a deep friendship that would last a lifetime. Goethe immortalized her in his novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther," where she served as the inspiration for the character of Lotte.

Marriage and Family

At the age of 17, on January 9, 1774, Maximiliana married Peter Anton Brentano, a successful Italian merchant and privy councilor in the Trier court. Despite their 21-year age gap, Maximiliana embraced the role of mistress of her large Italian household and stepmother to Brentano's five children.

Motherhood

Between 1775 and 1793, Maximiliana gave birth to 12 children of her own, including the future writers Bettina and Clemens Brentano. Her life as a mother was both rewarding and challenging, as she struggled to balance her own aspirations with the responsibilities of a large family.

Tragic Death

In 1793, tragedy struck when Maximiliana suddenly passed away at the age of 37. Her untimely death left a profound void in her family and among the literary circle that had known and cherished her. Maximiliana von La Roche remained a beloved figure in German literature, remembered for her indomitable spirit and the inspiration she provided to Goethe and others.
