Early Life and Education
Maim Bialik was born on December 12, 1975, in San Diego, California. Her parents, Barry and Beverly Bialik, were academics who raised her in a religious household with Ukrainian, Czechoslovakian, Polish, and Hungarian heritage. Following the teachings of Reform Judaism, Bialik attended Walter Reed Middle School in North Hollywood.
College and Graduate School
After graduating high school, Bialik enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) instead of the prestigious Harvard University. She pursued a degree in neuroscience, Hebrew, and Jewish studies. In 2000, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience. Continuing her studies, Bialik completed her Ph.D. in neuroscience in 2007. Her dissertation explored the hypothalamus's role in obsessive-compulsive, affiliative, and feeding behaviors in Prader-Willi syndrome.
Acting Career
Bialik's acting career began in 1988 with a role in the horror film "Pumpkinhead." She also appeared in the comedy "Beaches" that same year. Her breakthrough role came in the sitcom "Blossom" (1990-1995), where she portrayed a teenage girl navigating family life and her own identity.
Over the years, Bialik has starred in various television series, including "The Facts of Life" (1979-1988), "Bones" (2005-2017), "Saving Grace" (2007-2010), and "Parenthood" (2008-2013). She is best known for her role as the quirky neuroscientist Amy Farrah Fowler in the popular sitcom "The Big Bang Theory" (2007-2019).
In addition to her television work, Bialik has appeared in films such as "Kalamazoo?" (2006), "Chicago 8" (2011), "The Dog Who Saved Halloween" (2011), and "Stan Lee's Mighty Seven" (2014). She has also voiced characters in animated series such as "Hey Arnold!" and "The Fairly OddParents."
Personal Life
On August 31, 2003, Bialik married Michael Stone, who later converted to Judaism from Mormonism. They had two sons before divorcing in 2013. Bialik is a vegan and an avid reader. She is also known for her outspoken views on science and social issues.
Current Projects
Following the conclusion of "The Big Bang Theory," Bialik has continued to pursue acting and writing. She starred as Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler in the prequel series "Young Sheldon" (2017-present) and voiced Princess Luna in the animated series "Star vs. the Forces of Evil" (2017-2019). Bialik is also the author of the book "Girling Up: How to Be Strong, Smart, and Spectacular" (2017) and co-hosts the podcast "Mayim Bialik's Breakdown."
