Early Life and Education

Born on November 4, 1973, Megan Woods grew up in the Christchurch suburb of Wigram. She attended the Catholic Cathedral College in Christchurch and went on to pursue a PhD in history from the University of Canterbury.

Political Beginnings

Woods entered politics in 1999 as a member of the Alliance party. Following its split in 2002, she joined the Progressive Party. In 2005, she ran in the Christchurch Central electorate for Parliament but was unsuccessful. She later contested the Christchurch mayoral election in 2007, coming second to Bob Parker.

Labour Party and Parliamentary Election

In 2007, Woods switched to the Labour Party. She was elected to Parliament in 2011 as the candidate for the Wigram electorate, representing the opposition Labour Party. She has since been re-elected in the elections of 2014, 2017, and 2020.

Ministerial Positions

Following the 2017 election, Woods was appointed to the Cabinet as Minister for Greater Christchurch Regeneration. In 2020, she became the Minister of Housing and was given additional responsibilities for energy and resources, research, science, and innovation in 2017.
