Biography of Megan Agosta
Megan Christina Agosta-Marciano was born on February 12, 1987, in Windsor, Ontario. She grew up in an Italian family in Ruthven, ON. At the age of six, Agosta first stepped onto the ice with a hockey stick, having previously practiced figure skating. As a teenager, she played hockey with boys in the 'Chatham-Kent Cyclones' association before moving on to the 'Windsor Wildcats' association. She scored the winning goal for Team Ontario at the 2003 Canadian Winter Games, where she played alongside future Olympic champion Haley Irwin.
Hockey Career
Megan Agosta is a Canadian hockey player and forward who has excelled in both Canadian and American women's hockey. She played for the 'Montreal Stars' in the Canadian Women's Hockey League and represented Team Canada in women's ice hockey. Agosta represented Canada at the Winter Olympics in Turin in 2006, Vancouver in 2010, and Sochi in 2013, winning gold medals in all three events. She was named the Most Valuable Player of the women's hockey tournament at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Agosta also participated in three Women's World Championships, winning one gold and two silver medals.
Agosta is a versatile athlete who has also excelled in roller hockey. She won a gold medal for Canada at the 2004 Roller Hockey World Championship. During her college years at Mercyhurst College, Agosta achieved numerous accolades. She became the first freshman to be nominated for the Patty Kazmaier Award, which is awarded to the top female college hockey player. Agosta shared the record for the most goals (7) scored in a shorthanded situation with Krissy Wendell in the 2007-2008 season. She also equaled Wendell's career record of 16 shorthanded goals by the end of the 2008-2009 season. Agosta served as the captain of the Mercyhurst Lakers and earned numerous awards throughout her college career.
Achievements
On February 4, 2011, Agosta became the all-time leading scorer in NCAA women's hockey history, surpassing the previous record held by Julie Chiu. She scored three goals and had one assist in a victory for Mercyhurst College against Wayne State University, bringing her career points total to 286. On February 25, 2011, she became the all-time leading goal scorer in NCAA history, surpassing Nicole Corriero's record of 151 goals. Agosta scored her 152nd goal in a game against Robert Morris Colonials. In the same season, she was named Player of the Year by the CHA conference and was selected to the conference's first team. Agosta scored three goals in a championship game, surpassing the 300 career points mark when Mercyhurst Lakers defeated Syracuse 5-4.
In the 2011-2012 season, Agosta, playing for the 'Montreal Stars', won the Angela James Bowl for scoring the most points in a single season. With 80 points (41 goals and 39 assists), she broke the previous record of 69 points held by Jayna Hefford. Agosta also won the 'Clarkson Cup' in 2012 and became an unofficial member of the 'Triple Gold Club', an exclusive club for players who have won the Clarkson Cup, a gold medal at the Winter Olympics, and a gold medal at the Women's World Championship. Agosta has two sisters, Kara and Jade, and a brother named Jeric, who plays hockey for the University of Nebraska Omaha on a full athletic scholarship.
Personal Life
Agosta pursued a major in criminal justice at Mercyhurst College. On August 31, 2012, she married Marco Marciano, the goaltender coach for the Canadian women's national team. However, they separated in the fall of 2014, and Agosta decided to drop his last name. During this period, she temporarily stepped away from hockey and joined the Vancouver Police Department as a constable. In May 2015, Agosta graduated from the police academy. As of her most recent update, Megan Agosta continues to be involved in hockey and pursue her career in law enforcement.
