Early Life and Education

Mehdi Bazargan was born in 1907 in Bazargan, Iran, to an Azerbaijani merchant family. He pursued his education in France at the École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, where he earned a degree in thermodynamic engineering.

Return to Iran and Political Career

Upon his return to Iran in 1940, Bazargan joined the faculty of engineering at Tehran University and eventually became Dean of the Faculty of Technology. During the tenure of Mohammad Mossadegh as Prime Minister, Bazargan became the head of the newly nationalized Iranian oil industry (National Iranian Oil Company).

National Resistance and Party Leadership

Following Mossadegh's overthrow in 1953, Bazargan faced repeated arrests. Undeterred, he remained a vocal opponent of the monarchy. He founded the National Resistance Movement in 1953 and the Iran Freedom Movement party in 1961.

Temporary Government of Iran

After the Iranian Revolution in 1979, Ayatollah Khomeini appointed Bazargan as Prime Minister of the Provisional Government of Iran. However, ideological differences with Khomeini arose within months, particularly over the name of the state and the hostage crisis at the American embassy.

Resignation and Later Career

Bazargan resigned as Prime Minister in 1979. The following year, he was elected to the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) as head of the Iran Freedom Movement parliamentary faction. In 1984, the party boycotted parliamentary elections, and in 1985, Bazargan's presidential candidacy was disqualified by the Guardian Council.

Legacy and Death

Bazargan died of a heart attack on January 20, 1995, in Switzerland. He is remembered as an influential figure in Iranian politics who played a crucial role in the transition from monarchy to the Islamic Republic. His advocacy for democracy and transparency continues to inspire future generations.
