Early Life and Education
Nicholas William Peter Clegg was born on January 7, 1967, in Chalfont St. Giles, Buckinghamshire. His father was half-English and half-Russian, while his mother was a Dutch woman born in Indonesia. Clegg attended Westminster School and later went on to study archaeology and social anthropology at Robinson College, Cambridge University.
Political Career in Europe
After graduating from Cambridge, Clegg worked as a consultant in London and spent time in Budapest. In 1994, he joined the European Commission in Brussels. He held roles related to humanitarian projects in Central Asia and worked as a policy advisor and speechwriter for European Commissioner Leon Brittan.
In 1999, Clegg was elected as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Liberal Democrats. He became a spokesperson for the Liberal Democrat group and campaigned for greater transparency in the European Parliament.
Return to British Politics
After leaving the European Parliament, Clegg worked as a consultant and taught at Sheffield University and Cambridge. In 2005, he was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sheffield Hallam.
In Parliament, Clegg focused on European affairs and became the Lib Dem Home Affairs spokesperson under Menzies Campbell's leadership. He opposed restrictions on civil liberties and advocated for earned citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
Leader of the Liberal Democrats
In December 2007, Clegg was elected leader of the Liberal Democrats. He gained prominence in 2010 after winning the first UK television debate featuring political leaders. The media began to view him as a potential contender for the role of Prime Minister.
Personal Life
Clegg is fluent in English, Dutch, French, German, and Spanish. He is married to Miriam Gonzalez Durantez, a lawyer from Spain, and they have three sons. Clegg has stated that he does not believe in God but intends to raise his children as Catholics.
