The news of Melanie's homes being destroyed by hurricanes four times became known through the television show 'Hideous Houses,' and many were horrified to hear the story of how one hurricane after another left this family without a roof over their heads. In 1965, it was Hurricane 'Betsy'; twenty years later, in 1985, Hurricane 'Juan'; in 1988, Hurricane 'George,' and in 2005, the infamous Hurricane 'Katrina.' After that, Melanie's family received a $20,000 compensation for housing repairs, and they were grateful to the same television show 'Hideous Houses' for this.
The Devastation of Hurricane Isaac
The most recent and fifth hurricane to pass through Melanie's home was the powerful Hurricane 'Isaac' in 2012. On August 29th, the hurricane struck the town of Braithwaite, where Melanie lives with her husband, children, and her 74-year-old mother. The family's truck got stuck and refused to move, so their only option was to climb into the attic and wait, hoping for the best. Unfortunately, the 'best' did not happen, and the opposite occurred - the specially built 8-foot protective levee did not hold, and a powerful flood swept through the town, demolishing Melanie's home and taking away everything that was dear to her for years.
Loss and Resilience
Melanie knows for certain that losing a home means more than losing walls; it means losing everything that was dear to her - photographs, dishes, clothes, in short, everything that encompasses the concept of 'home.' Melanie's family, along with their three dogs and five kittens, survived, although at some point they thought they would not make it through the hurricane - the water flow was too powerful, the wind was too terrifying, and people seemed utterly helpless in this natural disaster. However, everyone survived, but Melanie lost her home for the fifth and record-breaking time.
A Record-Breaking Resident
Today, Melanie Martinez has become the ultimate record holder, and quite an unconventional one at that. She is also known as the Unluckiest Woman in America.
