Salvadoran Revolutionary

Personal Bodyguard to FMLN Leader

Salvadoran revolutionary and second-in-command of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), Cayetano Carpio, served as the personal bodyguard to the leader of El Salvador's largest guerrilla organization, the FMLN, while he was in Libya. Additionally, Carpio was responsible for internal security (counterintelligence) during this time.

Internal Conflict

Assassination of Melida Anaya Montes

In Managua, Nicaragua, Carpio assassinated Melida Anaya Montes, the second-most influential figure in the FPL, while she was in the city. This act was in response to internal discussions within the FPL leadership regarding the nature of the organization's integration with four others into the unified FMLN Front.

Blame and Suicide

Accusations and Guilt

Allegations arose that Cayetano Carpio had enabled the tragedy and could have been indirectly responsible. Unable to bear the accusations, Carpio committed suicide in his own home, leaving behind a note.

Exploitation by Government Propaganda

This incident was heavily exploited by anti-rebellion government propaganda to discredit both the FPL and the rebel movement as a whole.

Leadership Transition

Rise of Joaquín Villalobos

After this tragedy, the de facto leader of the FMLN became Joaquín Villalobos, who was the leader of the competing organization, the People's Revolutionary Army (ERP).
