Influences on Kamali's Style
Norma Kamali's style was influenced by theater, ballet, music, and sports, from which she borrowed clothing forms designed for active movement, as well as new materials. For example, in the 1970s, she offered gold lame fur-trimmed sweaters and in the late 1970s, she introduced sweaters made of fleece-like material commonly used in sportswear, as well as form-fitting jumpsuits and stretchy fabrics like lycra, nylon, and more. In the early 1980s, Kamali created models with oversized shoulder pads, combining sporty and romantic motifs with a retro style. Models from the 1990s were inspired by professional sportswear, incorporating modern high-tech fabrics.
